Following an interview with Playboy magazine, Scarlett Johansson made a splash last year, re-igniting debate around fidelity and monogamy. The 32 year old American actress, twice divorced and the mother of a a little girl, is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. Strong and independent, she demands to be paid the same as her male colleagues for the films she plays in. Her views on marriage and fidelity however always cause controversy…

Monogamy, too much“hard work”

The beautiful actress regularly throws curve balls at the media in relation to the lack of female sexual liberation. Johanssson, who is a great ambassador for gender equality in cinema and in the real world, believes that women are not “as free to have an openly fulfilled sex life” as men are.

Scarlett Johansson had previously shared similar views on marriage when she was interviewed by Marie Claire in 2016. She claimed that she didn’t “think human beings are monogamous creatures by nature”. She provided Playboy with further clarification of such views in 2017.

Johansson believes that “marriage is very romantic”, but she doesn’t “think it’s natural to be a monogamous person”, as it can be very “hard work”.

“The fact that it is such work for so many people—for everyone — the fact of that proves that it is not a natural thing. It’s something I have a lot of respect for and have participated in, but I think it definitely goes against some instinct to look beyond”, she clarifies.

She also declared to Cosmopolitan magazine: “When women talk about enjoying sex, it’s almost forbidden. Just having a healthy sexual attitude, you are immediately labelled as loose, wild, a slut.”

Everyone has their own opinion on the matter

So could you honestly contradict her? Because frankly, when a guy boasts to his buddies that he has three women on the go at the same time, and is having a ball between the sheets – boasting even further that they all know about each other – his friends slap him on the back, and pronounce their jealousy.

However, if a woman was to tell her friends that she had three lovers in her life and that it was all going swimmingly, you can be sure that a deathly silence would fall upon the room, before a barrage of questions such as “but do they all know you are cheating on them?”

Women are always referred to as “cheating” or “being cheated on”, but it is rarely said that they are just having fun, or that they are taking charge of what they want, as we would for men in the same situation. This is something Scarlett Johansson finds deplorable, and she speaks out strongly as an ambassador for women in this respect.
