Do you tend to always be cold, morning until night, and especially in the extremities -your legs, feet and hands? This cold sensation can sometimes be accompanied by muscle tension and contractions. Here are ten probable causes for permanently feeling cold, which will help you better understand it in order to remedy the problem.

1) Feeling cold: linked with anaemia

Anaemia mainly affects women and is characterised by a deficit of haemoglobin in the blood. Haemoglobin is a protein which transports oxygen around our bodies. When we are low in red blood cells, our organism and muscles do not get enough oxygen, and therefore they feel colder and can easily become numb.

Anaemia affects around one in four people in the world, which could be due to a lack of iron, B vitamins or folic acid. Fatigue, pallour, breathlessness during effort and feeling almost permanently cold are the most common symptoms.

2) Alcohol

Sorry to disappoint you but alcohol doesn’t heat you up! After having a few drinks, you may start to feel the cold. The calories provided in alcohol don’t contain nutrients or essential vitamins for your body. These calories are dispersed towards the surface of the body, which causes the sensation of heat.

In reality, your body temperature lowers by around a half a degree for every 50 g of alcohol consumed, which is why regular consumption of alcohol can be accompanied by chronic coldness.

3) Tiredness

Lack of sleep can disrupt your body’s mechanisms, which normally regulate body temperature. If you don’t get enough sleep (and thus lack energy), your body will not carry out its principal functions as well, such as muscle exertion or digestion, which help with producing body heat.

4) Iron deficiency

Iron deficiency is one of the main causes of anaemia, and is more common in women. We talk about iron deficiency anaemia when the lack of iron is accompanied by sensations of cold, shivers or cold sweats.

Iron carries oxygen to the blood and plays an important role in body temperature regulation. You can get a blood test to determine if you have an iron deficiency and/or ensure you are getting more iron in your diet with natural, healthy ingredients.

5) Poor blood circulation

Some people feel the cold only in the extremities, especially in the hands and feet, in summer as well as in winter. Sometimes, their extremities can go blue, become numb or painful. In such cases, it could be a problem with blood circulation, due to the heart not pumping enough blood to reach the body’s extremities, or because the arteries are blocked around the feet and hands.

You can consult your doctor who can help you find treatment solutions. You can also do physical exercise and consume a healthy diet.
