Sometimes foods that you eat don’t agree with you for varying different reasons.  If could be because you’ve eaten off fruit, leathery meat or fish that is not fresh.  This type of food poisoning can leave you feeling ill and confined to your bed for a couple of days.  So what foods should you eat to make you feel better?

What is food poisoning?

Food poisoning occurs most often after eating a bad food product.  Sometimes this can include a fruit that is too ripe or meats that are not cooked.   These foods can also be contaminated by germs such as Campylobacter, E. coli, Norovirus, Salmonella or Vibrio.

Food poisoning can induce different symptoms such as:

  • Vomiting;
  • Diarrhea;
  • Nausea;
  • Stomach cramps :
  • Sore head.

You know yourself that when you are a state like this the last thing that you want to do is to eat.  Our stomach feels heavy and the slightest smell of food makes us feel nauseous.  However we do need to eat food at some point so that we can feel better.  We can live without food for a long time anyway!  So what should you eat to feel better?

BRAT diet

BRAT diet allows us to combat diarrhea and other stomach problems.  It is made up of foods that are easily digested and that shouldn’t risk damaging your intestinal flora which is already feeling fragile.

The diet is made up of:

  • Bananas;
  • Rice;
  • Apple compotes;
  • Toast.

These foods are rich in starch which helps to thicken your excrement and therefore reduce diarrhea.  What is more the potassium in bananas can be used to update lost stocks during the intoxication.

Other foods that you can try

These foods are rich in calories which is exactly what you need after you have suffered from food poisoning or a case of diarrhea.  So that you can speed up the healing process you should also eat protein.  The helps to keep your muscles on form.

  • Fermented foods: like yogurts;
  • Clear stocks;
  • Potatoes (on their own);
  • Savory biscuits;
  • Chicken cooked in the oven without it’s skin (too fatty) ;
  • Well cooked turkey.

Drinks that can help you

Diarrhea is often caused by severe dehydration.  Your body’s water and electrolytes can run out quickly  You should therefore take care hydrate yourself during and after you have suffered from stomach pains.

Make sure to drink water and hydrating drinks like tea that is non caffeinated or ginger or lemon based drinks.  Make sure that you don’t drink too much coffee. This can irritate your stomach and can dehydrate you more than anything else.
