6) Adding salt before tasting your food

At the table, if you have a tendency to add salt to your meals automatically without even having tasted it, you need to stop this bad habit. What’s more, ready meals already contain high quantities of salt in order to conserve them.

In the UK, we tend to eat far too much bread, cheese and cured meats, and other very salty foods, which can carry risks for our health. Avoid consuming too much salt or consuming it too regularly.

Numerous cardiovascular complications are linked to eating too much salt.

7) Skipping breakfast

After fasting all night long, your body needs energy to get you going. Organise yourself to have a quick and nutritious breakfast, perhaps including whole cereals and fresh fruit juice, for example. If you don’t eat when you get up in the mornings, your body will start to store energy because it doesn’t have enough to accomplish basic tasks such as walking. Your attention and concentration levels can suffer, and you could even end up fainting, as your body won’t have gotten any energy in over 12 hours.

8) Not eating enough at lunch time

You should prioritise your midday meal over your evening meal. It is better to eat something light in the evenings, because you need a minimum of 4 hours for your body to digest what you put into it, especially if you spend the evening in front of the television  or if you go straight to bed after eating. Furthermore, you won’t burn any calories by staying inactive in the evenings.

To avoid eating too much in the evenings, eat a piece of fruit with a hot drink at around 5pm.

9) Not getting your five-a-day

We have had this drilled into us for many years now, with many ads even reminding us that sugary, fatty or savoury foods need to be eaten in moderation. However, the quality and the cost of fruit and veg can cause a problem for people.

Genetically modified fruit and veg, treated with pesticides, are not too expensive and are often affordable, but they are of a poor quality, because they contain numerous products that are toxic and dangerous for our health. We previously published an article on the health risks of GMOs and pesticides, to help you to shop safely.

Even washing them and peeling them is not enough, as the toxic products remain on the interior of fruit and veg that has been treated with pesticides. But stopping eating fruit and veg is obviously not the solution!

Therefore, try to go for organic fruit and vegetables, ideally locally produced, so as to ensure your body is getting the best out of them.

10) Not varying your diet

In any case, you are likely to get sick of eating the same foods all the time, which should naturally guide you towards varying the tastes and colours on your plate.

Don’t limit yourself (within reason) when it comes to fruit and veg, but also with spices and herbs, which have multiple health benefits. Turmeric, thyme, rosemary, garlic and ginger are also fantastic plants, roots and spices which have highly beneficial effects on your body and its functioning, as well as fighting off illness.
