Rooibos tea (or red bush tea) is non-caffeinated tea infusion which comes from the fermented leaves of the Aspalathus linearis bush from South Africa.  The benefits this tea for your health should not be under estimated as it is filled with antioxidants. Here are five great reasons why you should be regularly drinking this tea!

1/ It doesn’t contain caffeine

Unlike black tea, green tea or coffee, rooibos tea does not contain caffeine.  Despite having some benefits for the body, caffeine can cause problems for some people if they drink it.   This is why this herbal, non-caffeinated tea is a good alternative for people like:

  • Pregnant women;
  • Children;
  • People who suffer from anxiety or sleeping difficulties;
  • Heart problems;
  • People who are intolerant to caffeine.

2/ It hardly contains any tannin

Tannin is a vegetable substance which can be found in red wine, black tea and green tea.   It is also found in red bush tea but in lower quantities.  Tannin can interfere with the body’s iron absorption if consumed in large quantities.  However a study in 2013 showed that even if you drunk large quantities (six cups a day for six weeks) there was not remarked change in your iron absorption.

However there is a lot debate surrounding effects of tea on iron absorption.  While many claim that drinking green tea can prevent iron absorption and cause iron deficiencies other studies claim drinking green tea will have no effect.

3/ It is good for your heart

Rooibos tea is a great source of antioxidants which are essential for a healthy heart.  This is why drinking rooibos tea is good for people who are suffering from heart problems or who want to keep their heart in a healthy condition.

Drinking this tea also allows you to improve your lipid status.  In other words, it helps you to regulate the production of bad cholesterol and to produce good cholesterol.

4/ Great for when you are on a diet

As rooibos tea has no calories, it is very useful for diets.  It is a great alternative to other types of drinks when you are trying to loose or regulate your weight.  A team of South African researchers also showed that rooibos tea encourages hormone production which can have benefits on your metabolism and can make you feel healthier.

5/ Good for wrinkles

You can say no to wrinkles with rooibos tea!  Many people apply this tea onto their face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles even, crow’s feet around your eyes. Of course, drinking this tea probably won’t help to reduce your wrinkles, however according to studies tea-based creams seem to work because of the flavonoid content.
