French consumer association UFC Que Choisir published yet another damning report in January 2018 on the presence of nanoparticles in common consumer products. Their team conducted laboratory analysis of 20 different products, including foodstuffs, cosmetics and medications. Here are their results!

We can now detect nanoparticles

Up until recently, laboratory analysis was not available to search for the presence of nanoparticles in products because they did not yet have a reliable method for doing so. However, this is now possible, which gave rise to the Que Choisir laboratory test, which analysed 20 common consumer products: 7 food products, 9 cosmetic products and 4 medications, searching for nanoparticles.

They focused their research on substances likely to contain nanoparticles such as titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide, iron oxide, zinc oxide or carbon black.

In general, when this particular consumer organisation run such tests, they manage to highlight the “best choice” product, an alternative without substances which are toxic, chemical or contain other harmful ingredients or ones which have unknown effects on human health. In this case, they were unable to establish any “best choice” options.

Very common household products were flagged

The problem with nanoparticles is that they are so small that they can get into the skin and infiltrate the bloodstream. Certain products analysed make up household products that we all use in our everyday lives, such as Aquafresh (containing titanium dioxide) and Peanut M&Ms (containing titanium dioxide or E171)

In February 2017, UFC Que Choisir established a list of 185 cosmetic products containing toxic substances, allergens, irritants or endocrine disruptors. It also seems that the list of dangerous or potentially dangerous food additives just keeps getting longer, as well as the list of ineffective medications or ones with risks of side effects.

Natural alternatives in terms of food, beauty and health have never known such success, which is in no danger of slowing down -especially if we keep on discovering more dangerous substances and side effects linked to other products!
