Many British people suffer from sleeping disorders.  Lack of sleep is known to lead to many undesirable side effects that can have negative consequences for our health and general well-being.  If you suffer from chronic or regular sleeping difficulties, this can bring about even more negative side effects for our body and our cognitive capacities. 

Sleeping difficulties

According to a French medical institute, (INSV) there are no major consequences for people with childhood-related sleep disorders such as nightmares or night terrors. However, people with other sleep disorders, including insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea, may have significant health or life implications.

The consequences of lack of sleep can vary depending on the sleeping difficulty.  This is why you should consult a doctor.  Here is incomplete list of different sleeping difficulties:

  • Insomnia (with advance or delay)
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Narcolepsy
  • Sleep apnea,
  • Enuresis (bed wetting)
  • Nightmares
  • Sleepwalking
  • Night terrors
  • Hypnagogic illusion
  • Sleeping patterns
  • Somniloquy…

Lack of sleep: Symptoms and consequences

If you regularly lack sleep, some symptoms and undesirable side effects can start to develop:

  • Lack of concentration,
  • Awareness problems,
  • Lack of energy, weakened immune system, 
  • Mood swings,
  • Social isolation, depressive states,
  • Weight gain (unbalanced diet),
  • Illnesses (cerebral and vascular conditions, diabetes, pulmonary hypertension…)

So that you can sleep better at night you should try and get to bed at a fixed hour every night, try and avoid looking at screens just before you go to bed and don’t eat heavy meals.  Ideally you should finish your meal two hours prior to going to sleep so your body has time to digest .
