Heading back to school or work in September, we are often clad in a pair of shiny new shoes. However, the problem with new shoes is always the same: we end up with dreaded blisters, and small frictions burns appear wherever the shoes make contact with our feet.

Most brave soldiers’ solution to a blister is simple: pierce the blister and cover it with a plaster. However, this isn’t the best approach, and doesn’t protect your feet from infection. To heal well and to heal quickly, follow this advice:

1) Salt

Prepare a foot bath with 5 litres of hot water and 5 spoons of salt. Immerse your feet for around a quarter of an hour -it might not be too pleasant but it will give you some relief afterwards. Afterwards, dry your feet and have a look at the blisters. If the biggest ones are still uncomfortable when you put on your shoes, drain the liquid with a sterilised needle. However, if the blisters do not cause discomfort, try to leave them as they are, because otherwise they take longer to heal.

2) Aloe vera

It relieves pain and the soothes sensation of inflammation, and helps the skin to heal. It dries out the blister, meaning you will have less irritation. You simply have to apply the gel directly to the blisters or friction burns. Cover with a gauze and leave overnight.

3) Bicarbonate of soda

Prepare a foot bath with 5 stems of rosemary, which can provide relief through its anti-inflammatory properties, removing bacteria around the blisters or lesions. Next mix 200 mls of water with 20g of bicarbonate of soda and 40 mls of oxygenated water. Mix well until the mixture is homogenised. Apply this mixture generously to the affected areas until your mixture is all used up. Use twice a day for fast acting relief.

4) Garlic and thyme

Disinfect and soothe the area with a foot bath made with 5 litres of water and 100 g of thyme, and leave your feet in the bath for at least 20 minutes. Dry your feet well afterwards. Then chop 3 cloves of garlic and apply it to a gauze, to be placed on the affected areas, taking advantage of the natural antibiotic properties of garlic. Leave to work for 15 minutes. No need to rinse or do anything else to the blisters, simply allow the garlic to work its magic.
