When someone has bad breath, we often think that it is due to poor hygiene. However, sometimes such problems can be caused by illness, diet or as a result of bacteria multiplying in less accessible parts of the mouth. There is a gentle technique, inspired by ancient ayurvedic remedies, that consists of making a mouthwash with vegetable oil. We are going to give you 4 good reasons to try using coconut oil as a mouthwash, and explain how to use it to fight tartar, bad breath and other dental problems (gingivitis, etc.)

1) Less pain when chewing

Thanks to its components, coconut oil can prevent infections, inflammation and occasional aches and pains in the mouth.

2) It can prevent toothaches and gum infections

Its fatty acids and antibacterial properties fight against the presence of micro-organisms. It is also known for fighting off the main bacteria (Streptococcus mutants) responsible for tooth decay as well as many other dental problems. Its anti-inflammatory properties mean it is effective for prevention and treatment of gingivitis. Thanks to the oil, the bacteria don’t have an environment in which to multiply and this reduces build-up. This also helps with cavities and bleeding gums.

3) It reduces bad breath

In the harder-to-reach areas of the mouth, bacteria can release gasses and residues that cause bad breath. To counter the problem, the solutions are simple: good dental hygiene, mouthwash and flossing. How to use it?

1) Take a spoon of coconut oil and use it as a mouthwash for 3 to 5 minutes. It is recommended to do this first thing in the morning, but you can do it whenever suits you throughout the day.

2) Spit the oil into a bowl or into the bin afterwards, and not into the sink, because it solidifies when it cools and could block your pipes.

3) Rinse your mouth with lukewarm water if you have an unpleasant oily sensation afterwards.

Some people even mix it with bicarbonate of soda and use it as a toothpaste from time to time, which is also a possibility! Be aware that it is edible so there is no need to worry about getting sick if you swallow it by accident! As a final advantage, it tastes nice!
