We owe the famous expression “tell me what you eat and I’ll tell you who you are” to Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin, who was born in 1755 in France and who died in 1826. He was a lawyer, a judge, a gastronome and a culinary writer. Here are his recommendations for putting on weight and gaining muscle mass, without having to start body building!

A diet for putting on weight and building muscle

The Brillat-Savarin diet prescribes high consumption of carbohydrates, protein (eggs, meat) and regular physical activity.

In general, go for cereal based foods such as fresh bread.

Before 8 am, the famous culinary author recommends eating soup accompanied with a small quantity of bread or pasta, or a cup of hot chocolate.

At 11 am, have a lunch in which the main ingredient is fresh eggs -scrambled or fried -with pasta or meat. You can also drink a coffee.

After lunch, do a little physical exercise: cycling, running or just a 20-30 minute walk.

For dinner, have a soup, meat or fish with a starchy food such as rice or pasta. Cream and sauces are not forbidden -quite the contrary! For dessert, cakes and biscuits made from flour, eggs and sugar are ideal for gaining weight, which will be transformed into muscle if you do at least 30  minutes to an hour of exercise per day.

There is no point in denying yourself beer or wine, as they obviously contain sugar, which will help you gain weight.

You can add sugar to the fruit you consume.

You should also try to go to sleep between 11 pm and 1 am in the morning.

As you may have noticed, the Brillat-Savarin diet doesn’t contain many high fat foods.
