An image has recently gone viral, of 12 lemons in an egg carton. It is part of the “Know Your Lemons” campaign, which is aimed at fighting breast cancer. Led by the Worldwide Breast Cancer organisation for the past number of years, this campaign aims to raise awareness of 12 signs of breast cancer that women should learn to recognise. Screen for breast cancer using lemons
Given that breast cancer screening is only automatically offered by the NHS for women aged 50 to 70, the rest of us need to be aware of the symptoms to look out for.
The image below shows lemons with different characteristics in an egg carton, representing the different shapes and forms that can appear on a woman’s breasts when she is affected by breast cancer. The image was made by the creator of the visual campaign Corrine Ellsworth Beaumont, who is also the founder of the Worldwide Breast Cancer organisation.
Thanks to this campaign which has been widely distributed throughout social media, many web users, including Erin Schmith, learned that they had breast cancer, as they noticed a similarity between their symptoms and what they saw in the images.
Breast cancer: the 12 symptoms to recognise
From left to right and top to bottom, here are the various symptoms of breast cancer, as illustrated by the lemons:
- A thick mass
- Skin erosion
