What we all call a “blocked nose” is actually an inflammation of the blood vessels in our nostril walls. This inflammation could be due to a cold, hay fever, an allergy, sinusitis, a nasal infection or a cold snap. Here are 6 natural remedies to help you get rid of a blocked nose and get you back to normal.
During the day, if your nose is blocked you can take 2 granules of Sambucus Nigra 5CH up to 3 to 5 times per day.
If you have a headache, feeling a bit irritable, nauseous and have a congested nose you can take 2 granules of Nux Vomica 5 CH. 2) Essential oils
- Pour boiling water into a bowl and add 2 or 3 drops of Eucalyptus oil. Place your head under the bowl, cover your head with a dish towel and the breathe deeply taking in the steam for 5 minutes.
- Put 5 drops of Niaouli essential oil on a tissue and breath it in 4 to 6 times per day.
Be careful of any reasons why you shouldn’t be using essential oils before trying this type of natural remedy. Many oils should not be used when pregnant or breastfeeding while others should not be given to young children.
3) Sea water
If you have a really stuffy cold and blocked nose, salted water is an effective, natural and inexpensive method. Find a sea water spray and spray this mixture into each nostril up to 3 to 5 times per day.
If you still have a blocked nose after 2 to 3 days then you should contact your doctor as you can develop an infection in your sinuses.
4) Hot water compress
Steam and heat are naturally effective at unblocking congested nasal passages. Lie down and place a hot water compress on your sinus for 5 to 10 minutes. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times per day and especially before you go to bed.
5) Thyme infusions
Thyme has disinfecting properties that are useful for naturally curing a cold or a blocked nose. Infuse a sprig or a pinch of dried thyme in a cup of boiling water for 10 minutes. Drink 3 cups per day of this herbal infusion. If you have a sore throat as well as a blocked nose then you can add a teaspoon of honey.
6) Lemon juice
Lemons contain vitamin C and have many other medicinal virtues including antiseptic properties. Therefore it is ideal at combating viruses and bacteria.
Squeeze out the juice of half a lemon into a glass of water, mix and then drink! You can drink a glass of lemon juice up to 3 times per day to speed up your recovery process.
