Blepharitis is an inflammation of the glands and the rims of the eyelids, which causes red eyes, crustiness around the eyelashes and slightly swollen and painful eyelids. When the eyes dry out, this can lead to irritation. So how can you treat these symptoms naturally?
1) Natural remedy for blepharitis: cleaning your eyes
Run a clean facecloth or sterile compress under some warm water and apply it to the affected eye once or twice a day.
2) Calendula eye drops
Calendula eye drops are a homeopathic remedy for soothing the symptoms of blepharitis. Apply a few drops to the infected eye, without rubbing. You should find this substance in a pharmacy.
3) Castor oil
Castor oil has effective antifungal and antibacterial properties for treating the scalp, but also for treating eye irritations. Mix 10 drops with a little water and apply it 3 times a day.
4) Blueberry or chamomile water
Blueberry and chamomile flower waters, or hydrolates, are effective for blepharitis thanks to their soothing properties. Add a few drops of either one or both of these flower waters to a sterile compress and apply it to the irritated eye for several minutes.
Repeat 2 to 3 times a day for several days in order to get rid of the inflammation.
5) True lavender or myrtle flower water
Wash the infected eye with lukewarm water before adding a few drops of true lavender and/or myrtle flower water to a compress that you apply to the eye. Lavender has multiple benefits, especially anti-inflammatory properties which are great in the case of blepharitis or conjunctivitis.
