Aerophagia is a benign problem with digestive function, that can be embarrassing at times. When food is being digested, it start to build up and ferment in the stomach and the colon, causing flatulence or belching. Belching or ‘burping’ consists of expelling gas from the stomach and oesophagus via the mouth. Aerophagia is due to swallowing large quantities of air during eating. Here are three essential oils to help relieve the symptoms.

1) Basil essential oil

Basil essential oil contains between 50 and 75% estragole, which is a powerful antispasmodic for fighting against gastric and intestinal problems such as bloating, aerophagia, nausea or digestive cramps.

But it also contains linalol, a monoterpene alcohol which has calming and sedative properties which can regulate mood and reduce stress, which can often be the cause for aerophagia.

2) Caraway essential oil

Caraway essential oil has choleretic properties (which help the production of bile by the liver) and is a cholagogue (helping release bile into the intestines), both of which promote digestion. These properties help prevent food from fermenting, which causes bloating and belching.

Its carminative (gas-preventing) and antibacterial action promotes the expulsion of intestinal gases and helps prevent bloating and pain.

3) Coriander seed essential oil

Coriander seed essential oil has stomachic and carminative properties which promote digestion. Its antibacterial and anti-fermentative action supports the destruction of bacteria and germs in the intestines.

Before using essential oils, consult your doctor to ensure there are no contra-indications (medical treatments, pregnancy, breastfeeding, age range, etc.).
