Yes, you can fracture your penis. According to a very serious study published in the Advances in Urology review, there is one position in particular which is responsible for half of all penile fractures. As a general rule, the risk of a penile fracture is mainly linked to three positions, but the context or intense speed of sex can equally play a role. So what are the positions to be careful of?

1) Girl on top

In the majority of penis fractures, the researchers noticed that this accident occurs during sex when the girl is on top of the man. In fact, 50% of these fractures occurred during sex in this position.

The researchers conducted a study over a period of 13 years, following emergency department patients from Campinas in Brazil who were admitted for penile fractures. A penile fracture is generally caused by abnormal pressure that makes the penis bend, and often happens when a woman brings her body weight suddenly down while the penis is an an awkward position. In the majority of cases, you hear a crack followed by intense pain. The penis swells up and appears very bruised. This is not very common and affects mainly young men. The average age of patients presenting with this in Campinas was 34 years old.

2) Doggy style

29% of the cases of fractured penises were due to an accident during the ‘doggy style’ position.

During the study, 42 out of the 44 cases of penile fractures reported were confirmed following clinical tests, x-rays and surgeries. Of these cases, 28 were fractured during heterosexual sex, 4 during homosexual sex and 6 during “penile manipulation”.

3) Missionary

Of all the cases of penile fractures reported to the emergency department in Campinas during the study, 21% of them were linked to the missionary position.

Most of the time, the men who suffered a fracture were reluctant to call a doctor, but it is of extreme importance to get emergency medical care in the 12 to 24 hours following the injury.
