Most of the time, constipation is nothing to worry about. It’s a very common problem that we have all experienced from time to time. However, sometimes, we can’t get relief! And each time it happens, we get more desperate -we feel horrible, heavy and tired…. so, let’s get to the point! When your digestive system is playing up on you, medication can help, but there are also some ancient natural remedies you can try out.

1) Olive oil

Every morning, take a teaspoon of olive oil on an empty stomach, until symptoms have resolved. This remedy may not be the most pleasant, but at least it is effective! If you really can’t abide the taste, you can add a little lemon juice to improve it.

2) Mustard

Mustard can be very beneficial for your health. Eat is regularly with meals to ease your symptoms.

3) Bicarbonate of soda for baking

The bicarbonate of soda you typically use in baking is fantastic for digestive problems! After your meal, dilute 1 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water. Incredible! Not suitable for pregnant women, children less than 5 years of age or people watching their salt intake.

4) Ground linseed

Take a dessertspoon of linseeds (avoid seeds that are not ripe enough) and place them in 250 mls of water. The pectin should provide some relief, thanks to its laxative effects.

This should be avoided in the cases of intestinal obstruction or diverticulosis. Also unsuitable for pregnant women or children younger than 12 years.

5) Agar-agar

Add 1 gram of agar-agar to 250 mls of water and bring to the boil, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat, mix and drink.

If you don’t drink it all, throw out what is left over, because the mixture doesn’t keep. Also, avoid this remedy if you are watching your cholesterol, or if you are taking laxatives or medication to reduce your glucose levels. Other contra-indications include an allergy to red algae and intestinal obstruction.
