Water retention happens when an organism fails to eliminate the water present in the body, which is why certain limbs, particularly the hands, legs and feet, can swell up. Water retention can thus lead to a sensation of heavy legs and joint stiffness. Here are 5 natural remedies for rapidly putting a stop to water retention.

1) Parsley infusion

Parsley has effective diuretic properties which help eliminate water retention.

Mix ½ bouquet of fresh parsley with a tablespoon of lemon juice. Drink it once a day until the water retention goes away.

2) Green tea

Rich in caffeine, green tea can drain excess water from the body. Green tea is often used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat this health problem. Furthermore, it helps with weight loss.

3) Dandelion brew

Boil 1 litre of water in a pot and add a small handful of dandelion leaves. Leave it to boil on a high heat for 20 minutes and strain.

Drink one cup of this brew after each meal.

Caution: if you have kidney stones or obstruction of the bile ducts, ask the advice of your doctor beforehand.

4) Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar has numerous health benefits. Highly concentrated in potassium, it can balance sodium levels in the body, which is what causes swelling of certain limbs.

Detoxifying, it will drain the organism and get rid of water retention. Dilute a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a large glass of water and drink it twice a day.

5) Artichoke

Equally rich in potassium, artichoke has sufficient diuretic properties to naturally and effectively eliminate water retention. The fibre and the inulin it contains will help drain water from the body.
