Unfortunately, spots are not only for teenagers, and they are also quite a common problem in adulthood. To help you deal with adult acne, here are five possible causes to help you understand and combat it.

Hormonal changes

In women, hormone levels fluctuate throughout the month, which is one of the greatest factors in terms of adult acne, regardless of age. The menstrual cycle, contraception, pregnancy, menopause, etc.: any hormonal change can provoke acne because the hormonal imbalance leads to an overproduction of sebum (oil) by the skin cells. In some women, the contraceptive pill can help rebalance the production of hormones, bur for others, it can in fact contribute to acne.

If you are in the latter situation, consult your GP or gynaecologist, who will prescribe you a different type of contraception that could work better for you. Every month, before your period arrives, prepare your skin with scrubs and hydrating masks.

Stress, the main cause of adult acne

When we become stressed, the body releases cortisol, a substance that promotes risk of bacterial infection in the skin, and thus the appearance of spots.

In order to relax, try doing yoga, meditation, breathing exercises or any type of exercise, every day if possible. Physical exercise will help you eliminate toxins from your body, but it is important to shower afterwards.

Various cosmetic products

Warning!  Numerous cosmetic products contain aggressive chemical substances, that can even be toxic for your skin and body -including products from the big brand. The presence of all these harmful substances in our beauty products increases the risk of developing spots and acne.

If you notice an increase in spots after you start using a new product, stop using it for a few days. If the spots disappear, you should probably stop using this product…

Consuming certain foods

Be aware that the consumption of certain foods, especially processed food which is high in sugar and saturated fats, can increase your insulin levels and thus lead to inflammation of the skin. In fact, insulin peaks stimulate the production of oils, which obstruct the pores and cause spots.

Environmental factors

Certain environmental factors or your daily practices, such as air pollution, not changing your sheets or clothes often enough, etc., can contribute to breakouts. Changing your washing powder, not washing your bedclothes often enough, talking on the phone with your cheek stuck to the screen that you have been repeatedly touching without washing your hands, etc., are all factors.

All of these factors and/or a mixture of them can lead to the appearance of spots. If you still don’t manage to get rid of your spots after having taken these 5 main causes into account, consult a dermatologist or a naturopath.
