Our body is made up of 75% water. It is vital to continually top it up with water, in order to avoid developing certain symptoms, which have varying degrees of severity. Health n Wellness has a few recommendations and natural remedies for you in order to prevent dehydration.

1. You have chapped lips

One of the tell tale signs that proves that your body is lacking water is dry lips. Lips can often become chapped in winter, when it is cold and the skin tends to dry out. The fragile skin on the lips can even bleed. Avoid licking your lips in such cases, as this will only make things worse.

Our advice: Use a lip balm throughout the day. Work it in well at night before going to sleep, so that the product hydrates your lips throughout the night. You can also apply an exfoliating scrub made from natural products to remove dead skin cells. In order to do so, simply mix granulated sugar and olive oil. The final method consists of scrubbing your lips with a toothbrush. Always apply a hydrating lip balm afterwards, as this can be quite aggressive on your lips.

2. Your pee is dark

If your urine is brown or dark yellow in colour, your body is sending you the alert that you are lacking water. In fact, your kidneys have to work harder in order to eliminate toxins. Not drinking enough water can lead to the formation of kidney stones.

Our advice: In order to bring your urine back to a healthy light colour, drink plenty of water. Always keep a bottle of water with you, at work or when you are out shopping, and of course, while doing exercise. You can also drink tea, herbal teas or cranberry juice, which support the kidneys.

3. You are constipated

Water promotes digestion and allows for toxins to be evacuated from the body more easily. You can therefore be prone to constipation if you tend not to drink enough. However, be careful not to drink too much water. In fact, excess water is absorbed by the walls of the colon and you could end up with water intoxication.

Our advice: Eat plenty of fibre in your meals: eat lots of fruit and vegetables, as well as whole grain cereals. For example, eat cucumber, tomatoes, melon, watermelon, apples, whole grain bread, etc. Hot or cold soups could quickly become your best friends!

4. Wrinkles appear or your skin is dry

If your skin is not well enough hydrated, it can become damaged. Which leads to dry skin or the appearance of wrinkles on the face. In fact, without water, there are fewer exchanges between the different skin layers of the skin, which stiffens the collagen and elastin fibres.

Be aware that all skin types, even oily skin, can suffer from dehydration. These skin problems can become serious, and you could even develop psoriasis.

Our advice: Obviously, drink water, but also apply an organic moisturiser every morning (avoid products sold in the supermarkets, which contain numerous chemicals that are potentially carcinogenic).
