Mouth ulcers are benign infections in the mouth or on the lips. Often painful, they are generally caused by stress, fatigue or an unbalanced diet. Here are 10 natural remedies to help you get rid of mouth ulcers!

1) Bicarbonate of soda mouthwash

Dilute a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of lukewarm water and swirl it in your mouth for 30 seconds, without swallowing it. Spit it out and rinse your mouth afterwards.

You can also replace bicarbonate of soda with clay, adding a teaspoon of green clay to a glass of lukewarm water, and following the same instructions. Repeat this natural remedy once a day.

2) Apple cider vinegar

Apply a few drops of apple cider vinegar directly to the mouth ulcer several times a day. This should get rid of the mouth ulcer within a few days, due to the disinfectant effect of the vinegar.

3) Black tea

Make a cup of black tea, which you can drink, and apply the damp teabag (once it has cooled) to the mouth ulcer. Leave it to work for a few minutes, as the tannins in the tea will ease the pain and naturally treat the ulcer.

4) Basil

Basil has antiseptic properties, and you simply need to chew on a few raw basil leaves. Do so several times a day if necessary. After 2 or 3 days, the mouth ulcer should have disappeared.

5) Propolis

If you would like to prevent mouth ulcers from appearing, chew on a few chunks of propolis or on propolis gum several times a week. These can easily be found in pharmacies or health food shops.

6) Myrrh

Seek the advice of your pharmacist before using this method. Add a few drops of undiluted myrrh tincture to a cotton bud and apply it to the mouth ulcer(s). Repeat 3 times a day, but no more.

7) Sage leaves

Sage, like many medicinal herbs, has multiple properties.

Infuse a few sage leaves in a bowl of hot water and drink the beverage 2 to 3 times a day, until the mouth ulcers are gone. You can also use a sage infusion as a mouthwash.

8) Tea tree essential oil

Add 1 drop of tea tree essential oil to a cotton bud and dab it to the mouth ulcer. Be sure to check that this essential oil is not contra-indicated for you, depending on your own situation (pregnancy, breastfeeding, undergoing treatment, etc.).

9) Laurel essential oil

In the palm of your hand, dilute 1 drop of laurel essential oil with a little olive oil and apply the mixture directly to the mouth ulcer. Just like with tea tree essential oil, make sure there are no contra-indications before using laurel essential oil.

10) Lemon

Apply a few drops of lemon juice directly to the ulcer. The acidity of the lemon may sting but it will heal the mouth ulcer very effectively.
