Did you know that it’s not good to wear a bra for more than 7 hours at a time, or during the night? In fact, outside of this time limit, the elastic in your bra can affect the blood circulation around your bust. However, 80% of women wear a bra, and some keep it on overnight. Read on to find out the health consequences of regularly wearing a bra.

The bra: a history of split opinions

According to a French study carried out over a period of 15 years by Professor Jean-Denis Rouillon, wearing a bra causes a loss of breast firmness and the appearance of streaks on the skin.

To remedy this, if you can’t go without one, be careful not to choose very tight bras that will compress your breasts and prevent good blood circulation.

Women with a large bust confirm that they like wearing a bra because it keeps their breasts in place and provides extra comfort, especially when they walk or do exercise. They should make sure that their bra fits well and doesn’t cut off blood circulation around the back and chest.

Wearing a bra a night: the health risks

If you didn’t know it already, during the night, your body purifies itself of toxins. But a bra compresses several glands and lymph canals, which disrupts the filtration and natural elimination of toxins by lymphatic drainage.

Wearing a bra can also cause water retention which can then lead to long term problems such as the appearance of cysts, fibrous nodules or tumours.

Regularly wearing a bra at night can compress your breasts and a part of the armpits, which can cause a release of toxins by the lymph glands. Furthermore, the constricted blood circulation can be made worse by another factor: the increased temperature in the chest area caused by wearing a bra can become toxic in the long term, because pre-cancerous breast tissue has a higher temperature than healthy breast tissue. Wearing a bra at night therefore may be dangerous and seems to promote the risk of breast cancer.

To promote good circulation of the blood and lymph glands, so as to eliminate toxins and ensure they don’t build up around the breasts, your chest needs to be free and able to move.

If you absolutely feel the need to wear a bra at night, and can’t do without it, be aware that there are bras available that are designed to separate the breasts and prevent the appearance of wrinkles, which can form when the breasts are pressed together all night long.
