Nutella: 3 good reasons to limit your consumption

Nutritionists have recently lashed out against an advertising campaign by Ferrero, the makers of the famous chocolate spread Nutella, which was trying to market it as a ‘quality product’. So why were French consumers recently attacking each other in supermarkets to get their hands on a product that is so bad for their health? It’s a mystery. However, the composition of the product is certainly not! And however, it seems that there are many people who just don’t want to hear it….

Nutella: an obesity machine

It is quite right that Nutella has been subjected to criticism from health professionals for a number of years, in terms of its composition -although the manufacturers are  keen to stress their concern for their customers’ health via the quality of their products.

Official analyses have shown that Nutella contains 85% sugar and fat, and more precisely:

  • 50% sugar
  • 20% palm oil
  • 13% hazelnuts
  • 7.4% cocoa powder
  • 6.6 % skimmed milk powder
  • whey and emulsifier (soy lecithin)
  • flavouring

85% sugar and fat. This number alone should be enough to explain to Nutella fans that this chocolate spread is more or less a cocktail of destruction for their health, potentially leading to diabetes, weight gain, obesity, illness, etc.

Consumed regularly, it could lead to problems with blood sugar levels (diabetes, glucose intolerance, etc.) or even worse, cardiovascular disease. Palm oil, when consumed too regularly (several times a week) and in overly large quantities, can obstruct the arteries and blood vessels, and potentially cause a heart attack.

We also mustn’t forget the considerable quantity of sugar (50%), and the risks related to consuming large quantities of sugar, not to mention the palm oil, whose exploitation is responsible for frightening levels of deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia, its two greatest global producers.
